Compressor Repair - What Can Go Wrong?

Compressor Repair

There are a few things that may need to be repaired or replaced in your air compressor. See below for a list of the common problems or repairs that might be needed:

Unloader valve:

When there are problems with the unloader valve it may cause the compressor to make loud humming noise and stall a lot. Because the unloader valve is part of the pressure switch assembly you may need to get a replacement pressure switch assembly. They are fairly easy to replace - but don't forget to turn the machine off first!

Compressor has a short on cycle:

If your compressor turns off a lot then it could be any of the following faults causing this:

-obstructed thermostat - clear all obstructions from the thermostat and see if the problem is fixed
-leaking refrigerant - have a technician take a look at this
-iced coils - you may need to replace the coils
-over sized cooling system - remove over sized unit and replace

Are your oil levels OK?

Check the oil levels regularly - preferably on a daily basis and make sure that it is topped up and not running low. Help to keep the compressor running smoothly by keeping oil levels up.

Is the air filter dirty?

If the air filters are not changed and cleaned regularly this can cause problems in the functioning of the air compressor. As a result the compressor has to work harder and will use more electricity in the process. If you notice a lot of dirt and dust building up then change the filter - and do this every 3 to 6 months anyway.
