Screw Compressor Parts Maintenance
A Screw Compressor has one or two rotors. Twin rotors have two very large screws which usually have a complicated shape and run at very high speeds very closely together. The screws intertwine with each other as they turn. Rotary screw compressors are usually used to operate jackhammers or other air tools that require a large volume of high pressure air.
There are two types of rotary screw compressor, oil free and oil flooded.
If the air compressor is oil free then the air is compressed by the screws alone without any help from an oil seal. With oil flooded rotary screw compressors the oil is injected into compression cavities which seals and makes a cooling sink for the gas charge.
Whichever kind of compressor you have, regular maintenance should be achieved in order to avoid a breakdown of the compressor leading to large repair bills that could otherwise have been avoided.
There is not much room between the rotors and this is why failure can occur. Because of the speed that a screw compressor runs at, when something does go wrong, debris and other particles are produced before the compressor finally stops, this can cause massive problems with the screws and can render the machine beyond repair.
The compressor should be maintained regularly by replacing the bearings before any signs of distress appear. All parts of the compressor should be checked for signs of wear and tear and replaced when necessary.
